La Paz, Mexico: My Relaxing Solo Adventure in Baja California Sur

Some trips are packed with activities, while others are simply about slowing down and enjoying a destination. My solo trip to La Paz, Mexico, was exactly that.

The idea for this trip actually started a few months earlier during my visit to Cabo San Lucas. While staying at my hotel, I met the owner, who happened to be from San Diego. We talked for quite a while about traveling through Baja California Sur, including my plans to eventually drive my camper van into Mexico.

Before I left, he gave me one piece of advice that stuck with me.

“If you want a more relaxed version of Cabo, go to La Paz.”

That conversation planted the seed, and a few months later I found myself boarding a flight to one of my favorite cities in Mexico.

Arriving in La Paz

After landing at La Paz International Airport, I made my way to my Airbnb, located just a short walk from the city’s famous waterfront.

One of the things I immediately noticed was how calm everything felt.

Unlike Cabo San Lucas, there wasn’t a constant party atmosphere. Instead, La Paz felt like a city where locals actually lived. The pace was slower, the traffic lighter, and the waterfront invited you to simply walk, relax, and enjoy the views.

That first evening I wandered along the Malecón, watched the sunset over the Sea of Cortez, admired the sculptures lining the waterfront, and immediately understood why so many travelers fall in love with this city.

Staying Somewhere Different

During my stay I actually stayed in two different Airbnbs.

One of them was fairly standard, but the second one was unlike anything I’d stayed in before. It featured a small wooden cabin alongside a unique dome-style accommodation that gave the property a fun, creative atmosphere.

I always enjoy trying different places to stay while traveling because accommodations become part of the experience, not just somewhere to sleep.

Exploring by Scooter

Instead of renting a car, I decided to rent a scooter.

The rental shop actually tried convincing me to take one of their motorcycles, but I felt much more comfortable on the scooter. It turned out to be the perfect decision.

Having two wheels gave me the freedom to explore the coastline at my own pace without worrying about traffic or parking.

Some of my favorite travel memories come from simply riding scenic roads with no real destination, and La Paz offered plenty of beautiful stretches along the coast.

The Beautiful La Paz Malecón

Every visit to La Paz eventually leads back to the Malecón.

This long waterfront promenade stretches for miles along the bay and quickly became my favorite place to spend time.

Whether I was grabbing coffee in the morning, watching boats in the harbor, photographing public art, or returning for sunset, there always seemed to be something happening without ever feeling crowded.

The sculptures, colorful city signs, palm trees, restaurants, and ocean views create one of the nicest waterfronts I’ve experienced in Mexico.

Balandra Beach Was Worth the Ride

One day I rode my scooter out to the famous Balandra Beach.

Photos don’t really prepare you for just how beautiful this place is.

The water is incredibly clear, the sand is bright white, and the surrounding mountains create one of the most scenic bays in Baja California Sur.

Unlike many beaches that focus on resorts and nightlife, Balandra feels natural and peaceful.

I spent several hours simply walking the shoreline, relaxing, and taking photographs before enjoying lunch overlooking the water.

For me, this was easily one of the highlights of the trip.

Fresh Seafood and Baja Flavors

Like many of my trips, food is always part of the experience.

I enjoyed fresh grilled fish, cold Mexican beer, seafood along the waterfront, and several relaxing meals while watching the ocean.

Nothing felt rushed.

It matched the entire personality of La Paz.

Simple.

Fresh.

Relaxed.

Why I Preferred La Paz

Cabo San Lucas is beautiful, but it attracts large crowds, busy resorts, cruise passengers, and nightlife.

La Paz offers something different.

It feels authentic.

You can still enjoy beautiful beaches, amazing sunsets, fresh seafood, and excellent waterfront views without feeling overwhelmed by tourism.

If you’re looking for relaxation instead of nonstop entertainment, La Paz may actually be the better choice.

That’s exactly what I found during my visit.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes the best trips aren’t built around expensive excursions or packed itineraries.

Sometimes they’re about discovering a place that simply feels right.

For me, La Paz became one of those destinations.

From riding a scooter along the coast to spending quiet evenings on the Malecón, relaxing at Balandra Beach, and enjoying fresh seafood by the water, everything about this trip reminded me why I love traveling.

It’s a city I would gladly return to—and next time I may even continue farther north into Baja California Sur to explore even more of this incredible peninsula.
