Introduction
When most people think about visiting Iguazú Falls, they picture massive waterfalls, jungle scenery, and one of South America’s greatest natural wonders.
What they probably don’t picture is an ambulance ride, an emergency room visit, missed hotel reservations, canceled tours, lost wallets, and a pair of taxi drivers who somehow managed to save our trip.
Our visit to Argentina had already been memorable. We had spent several days exploring Buenos Aires, visiting Tigre, taking a day trip to Uruguay, and experiencing some of the city’s incredible food and culture. Unfortunately, we had also dealt with the stress of losing my wallet earlier in the trip, something that would continue to create problems until we finally returned home.
Just when we thought things couldn’t get any more complicated, I found myself dealing with a health scare.
What was supposed to be a simple flight from Buenos Aires to Iguazú Falls turned into one of the most stressful travel days I’ve experienced in years.
Looking back now, it also became one of the most memorable.
An Unexpected Trip to the Emergency Room
The night before our scheduled departure to Iguazú, I experienced elevated blood pressure and chest discomfort that was serious enough to warrant medical attention.
Before long, I found myself riding in an ambulance through Buenos Aires and being evaluated at a local emergency room.
Traveling is wonderful, but moments like this remind you that life doesn’t stop simply because you’re on vacation.
After several hours of testing and observation, the doctors determined that I was stable enough to continue traveling. It was a huge relief, but by then our carefully planned itinerary had already been disrupted. I don’t always get travel insurance on all trips, because of planned activities and a previous trip where my wife had to go for an emergency room visit, I signed up with Safety Wing Insurance for this one.
We missed our original travel plans and lost our first night’s stay at our hotel in Puerto Iguazú.
Not exactly the start we had imagined.
Still, after everything settled down, we were determined to continue the trip.
Finally Arriving in Puerto Iguazú
The following morning we boarded our flight and finally made our way to Puerto Iguazú.
Our taxi driver met us at the airport and took us into town. Since we arrived early in the morning, most of the shops and businesses were still closed.
After dropping our bags, we spent some time walking around the area, picking up a few necessities and getting our bearings before returning to rest.
The previous twenty-four hours had been exhausting.
Between the emergency room visit, rearranged flights, and the general stress that comes with travel disruptions, neither of us had much energy left.
Thankfully, Puerto Iguazú immediately felt relaxed and welcoming.
Sometimes a destination has a way of lowering your stress level the moment you arrive.
This was one of those places.
Puerto Iguazú After Dark
Later that afternoon, after finally getting some rest, we headed back out to explore.
One of the surprises of our visit was discovering how enjoyable the town itself was.
Most travelers come here solely for the waterfalls. I understand why. The falls are world famous.
What I didn’t expect was how much I would enjoy the atmosphere of Puerto Iguazú.
Just a few blocks from where we were staying, the streets came alive with restaurants, bars, outdoor seating, music, and travelers from around the world.
We spent the evening wandering through the area, enjoying dinner, people-watching, and simply appreciating the fact that after everything that had happened, we had finally made it.
Travel isn’t always about checking attractions off a list.
Sometimes it’s simply enjoying the moment you’re in.
When Our Brazil Tour Fell Apart
The next morning we woke up excited to visit the Brazilian side of Iguazú Falls.
Unfortunately, our plans immediately hit another obstacle.
The tour company arrived as scheduled, but after reviewing our documentation, it became clear we were missing paperwork needed for the trip.
Within minutes, the tour was canceled.
At that point it felt like our entire Argentina adventure had become a series of unexpected problems.
But as it turned out, this cancellation ended up leading to one of the best decisions of the trip.
The Taxi Driver Who Saved Our Vacation
The same taxi driver who had picked us up from the airport returned that morning.
After explaining our situation, he offered to help.
Instead of relying on a large tour group, we arranged private transportation directly with him.
It turned out to be one of the smartest travel decisions we made.
Not only did we have complete flexibility, but crossing between Argentina and Brazil became much easier and more efficient than dealing with a bus full of tourists.
Over the next couple of days, he became much more than a driver.
He became our local guide, problem solver, and unofficial trip savior.
Sometimes the best travel experiences happen when you abandon the original plan and trust the people who know the area best.
Experiencing Iguazú/Iguacu Falls
Iguazú and Iguaçu are often used interchangeably, but they refer to the same incredible waterfall system viewed from two different countries. Iguazú Falls is the Spanish spelling used in Argentina, while Iguaçu Falls is the Portuguese spelling used in Brazil. Together they form one of the largest and most spectacular waterfall systems in the world, spanning nearly two miles and consisting of more than 250 individual cascades. The Argentine side offers an up-close and immersive experience with extensive walkways and viewpoints, while the Brazilian side provides sweeping panoramic views that showcase the full scale of the falls. Visiting both sides gives travelers a complete appreciation of this UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of South America’s greatest natural wonders.
Nothing really prepares you for your first view of Iguazú Falls.

But standing there in person is something else entirely.
The sheer size of the falls is difficult to comprehend until you’re looking directly at them.
Water crashes from every direction.
Mist rises into the air.
Rainbows appear and disappear depending on where you’re standing.
The sound alone is incredible.
We spent hours exploring the various viewpoints, walkways, and observation platforms throughout the park.
Every turn seemed to reveal another spectacular view.
Some sections placed us high above the falls while others brought us remarkably close to the water.
It’s easy to understand why Iguazú Falls is often considered one of the most impressive natural attractions in the world.
Dinner at Tres Fronteras
One of our favorite evenings was spent near the famous Three Borders Landmark, known locally as Tres Fronteras.
This unique location allows visitors to see three countries at once.
Standing there, we were looking at Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay all meeting near the convergence of the Iguazú and Paraná Rivers.
It’s one of those places that reminds you how connected South America really is.
We enjoyed dinner nearby while watching the sunset and taking in the views.
After the chaos of the previous few days, it was exactly the kind of relaxing evening we needed.
Our Final Night in the Jungle
For our final evening in the region, we stayed at Selvaje Lodge Iguazu, surrounded by nature.
After several hectic days, it felt like the perfect place to slow down.
The setting was peaceful, quiet, and completely different from the energy of Buenos Aires.
We enjoyed a great meal, reflected on everything that had happened, and prepared for the journey home.
At least we thought we were preparing for the journey home.
As it turned out, our adventure wasn’t quite finished yet.
Final Thoughts
When I look back on our visit to Iguazú Falls, I don’t just remember the waterfalls.
I remember the emergency room.
I remember the canceled tour.
I remember the stress of traveling without my wallet.
I remember the taxi driver who helped rescue our plans.
And I remember the feeling of standing in front of one of the world’s greatest natural wonders after everything it took to get there.
Travel rarely goes exactly as planned.
Sometimes that’s frustrating.
Sometimes it’s expensive.
Sometimes it’s downright exhausting.
But those unexpected twists are often what create the stories we remember most.
Our trip to Iguazú Falls certainly proved that.
