Our Bogotá Visa Trip: A Week of Hope, Exploration, and Disappointment

Bogotá visa trip

Bogota Visa Trip

Introduction

Some trips are planned around famous landmarks, beautiful scenery, or unforgettable experiences. Others are built around important life events. Our recent trip to Bogotá fell into the second category.

My wife and I traveled from Cúcuta to Bogotá for what we hoped would be the final step in obtaining a U.S. tourist visa. While the trip ultimately ended with a disappointing interview result, it also gave us the opportunity to spend time exploring Colombia’s capital, discovering new neighborhoods, enjoying local food, and making the best of a situation that didn’t go as planned.

Looking back, I don’t remember the visa interview as much as I remember the journey itself.

Why We Traveled to Bogotá

The primary purpose of our trip was simple. My wife had both her biometrics appointment and embassy interview scheduled in Bogotá.

Like many couples going through the process, we spent weeks preparing documents, reviewing information, and trying to understand what to expect. No matter how much preparation you do, however, there is always uncertainty surrounding a visa interview.

Rather than focus entirely on the appointment, we decided to treat the trip as both an important obligation and a chance to spend time together in one of Colombia’s most interesting cities.

Arriving in Bogotá

We arrived in Bogotá late in the evening and made our way to the Modelia neighborhood where we had rented an Airbnb.

Choosing the right location turned out to be one of the best decisions we made. Bogotá traffic is legendary, and not in a good way. Having lived in Los Angeles for years, I thought I understood traffic congestion, but Bogotá can be every bit as challenging.

Because our appointments were located nearby, staying in Modelia reduced stress and allowed us to focus on the purpose of the trip rather than spending hours in traffic. The Airbnb also served a fantastic breakfast in the mornings. A great value!

The first evening was quiet. We checked in, settled down, and prepared for the busy days ahead.

The First Appointment

The following morning started with breakfast and a mixture of optimism and nervous energy.

Fortunately, the first appointment went smoothly.

With that responsibility behind us, we suddenly found ourselves with free time and began exploring the area around Connecta 26. I was pleasantly surprised by the neighborhood. It had a modern feel with restaurants, cafés, office buildings, students, and coworking spaces.

It wasn’t necessarily a place most tourists would visit, but it gave me a glimpse into a different side of Bogotá.

Exploring the City

One thing I’ve learned during my travels is that every city has multiple personalities.

Many visitors only see the tourist attractions. I enjoy seeing how people actually live.

Between appointments, we explored different parts of Bogotá, visited shopping centers, enjoyed local restaurants, and spent time simply walking and observing daily life.

The city felt energetic and busy. Bogotá may not immediately charm visitors the way Medellín often does, but it rewards those willing to spend time exploring beyond first impressions.

Discovering Bogotá’s Street Art

One of the highlights of the trip was seeing Bogotá’s famous street art.

The murals throughout La Candelaria and other parts of the city tell stories about Colombian culture, politics, history, and identity. Some were colorful and uplifting. Others carried deeper messages about the country’s past.

Even after multiple visits to Colombia, I continue to find new perspectives through its art and public spaces.

A Weekend Escape to Villa de Leyva

Knowing we had time before the embassy interview, we decided to take a short trip to Villa de Leyva.

That decision turned out to be one of the best parts of the entire week.

The contrast between Bogotá and Villa de Leyva could not have been greater. We went from a bustling capital city filled with traffic and activity to a peaceful colonial town surrounded by mountains and open space.

The slower pace was exactly what we needed.

We explored the town square, visited Pozos Azules, enjoyed local cafés, and spent time simply appreciating the atmosphere.

Sometimes stepping away from a stressful situation provides exactly the perspective you need.

Returning for Interview Day

Eventually, the time came to return to Bogotá for the interview itself.

No matter how prepared you feel, there is always uncertainty.

We arrived early and waited like everyone else hoping for good news.

The interview itself was surprisingly short.

A handful of questions were asked, and within minutes the decision had been made.

Unfortunately, the visa was denied.

Processing the Disappointment

Disappointment is part of travel and part of life.

I’ve traveled long enough to know that not every journey ends the way we hope.

Flights get canceled.

Plans change.

Weather ruins itineraries.

Sometimes important appointments simply don’t go your way.

While the denial was difficult to accept, it didn’t erase the experiences we had throughout the week.

In many ways, the trip became bigger than the interview itself.

What We Learned

The experience reinforced something I have learned repeatedly through travel.

You can prepare.

You can plan.

You can hope.

But ultimately, some outcomes remain outside your control.

The best approach is to focus on what you can control, learn from the experience, and continue moving forward.

That mindset has served me well throughout my travels and through many of life’s challenges.

Final Thoughts

Our Bogotá visa trip didn’t end the way we wanted.

The interview result was disappointing, and we left with unanswered questions about what comes next.

Yet when I look back at the week, I remember much more than the interview.

I remember exploring new neighborhoods.

I remember discovering Bogotá’s street art.

I remember spending time in Villa de Leyva.

I remember sharing the experience together.

Travel isn’t always about getting the result you want. Sometimes it’s about the experiences you gain along the way.

And despite the disappointment, Bogotá gave us plenty of those.
