10 Days in Buenos Aires, Tigre, Iguazú Falls & Colonia (Uruguay): A Real Travel Story
Introduction: A Perfect Plan… Until It Wasn’t
I planned this 10-day Buenos Aires itinerary trip down to the smallest detail—flight timing, airport selection, transportation, and daily flow. The goal was simple: maximize time, minimize stress, and experience the best of Buenos Aires, Tigre, Colonia, and Iguazú Falls.
But here’s the truth nobody tells you clearly enough:
Even the best plan can get wrecked—and when it does, your mindset matters more than your itinerary.
This trip had it all: flight cancellations, a lost wallet, missed tours, unexpected hospital visits, and extra costs that stacked up fast.
And yet… it still turned into an unforgettable experience.
Day 1: Travel Chaos Right Out the Gate
The trip was supposed to begin smoothly—departing from Cúcuta, connecting through Bogotá, and landing early at Aeroparque Jorge Newbery to get a full first day in the city.
Instead, the airline canceled the original flight and pushed us onto a later schedule, cutting nearly 12 hours out of the trip.
That’s not a small inconvenience—that’s a full day gone.
After arguing at the airport, we secured a same-day alternative, arriving at 3:40 p.m. instead of early morning. Not ideal, but at that point, the mission was simple: get there and reset.
Dinner that night at Hierro Parrilla reminded me why Argentina is worth the effort. Great steak, relaxed atmosphere, and a needed mental reset.

Day 2: Rain, Recoleta & Letting the Day Happen
Rain changed the plan again, so we pivoted.
After a quick breakfast out, we explored the city on foot—murals, quiet streets, and local energy. Buenos Aires rewards wandering.
We eventually made our way to Recoleta Cemetery, which turned out to be far more impressive than expected. Massive mausoleums, intricate architecture, and deep history—including the resting place of Eva Perón.
From there, we eased into Palermo—sunset, food, and a more relaxed pace.

Day 3: Tigre Delta & Tango at Night
A highlight day.
We took the train to Tigre, about an hour from the city. The shift in atmosphere is immediate—waterways, boats, and a slower rhythm.
A boat ride through the delta gave us one of the most peaceful moments of the trip.
That night, we went full Buenos Aires with a tango show at El Querandí Tango Show—three-course dinner, Malbec wine, and a performance that delivered exactly what you come for.
Then things took a turn.

The Wallet Incident: A Traveler’s Wake-Up Call
After the show, my phone died before the Uber arrived, forcing us into a taxi. By the time we got back to the Airbnb, my wallet was gone.
Inside it: IDs, credit cards, cash—everything.
That moment could have derailed the entire trip.
What saved it:
Google Wallet
Passport still in hand
Fraud protection on cards
No one used the cards, and I was still able to function financially—but make no mistake, that’s a situation you don’t want to test.
Day 4: Puerto Madero, Perspective & San Telmo
We headed to Puerto Madero, but got dropped in the wrong area.
At first, it looked like a wasted trip.
But instead of forcing the narrative, we kept walking—and found the real heart of the district: waterfront views, restaurants, and the iconic Puente de la Mujer.

From there, we walked into San Telmo, one of the most authentic areas in the city.
Inside Mercado de San Telmo, we slowed things down—this time with wine, not beer—soaking in the atmosphere and energy.

Night at the Obelisk: Buenos Aires After Dark
From San Telmo, we headed to Obelisco de Buenos Aires.
At night, this area hits differently.
City lights, movement, and that iconic structure standing in the middle of it all—it’s one of the best photo spots in Buenos Aires. A perfect way to close out the night before an early start.

Day 5: Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay
We caught an early ferry across the Río de la Plata to Colonia del Sacramento.
About a two-hour ride, and you’re in a completely different world.
Cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and a slower pace define this town. It’s not about checking boxes—it’s about being present.
We spent the day simply enjoying it:
Lunch in a quiet setting
A beer stop
Coffee break
Walking without a plan
The return ferry gave us a beautiful sunset over the water—one of those simple moments that sticks with you.

Day 6: Japanese Gardens & Another Airline Disaster
Before heading to Iguazú, we spent time at Jardín Japonés—peaceful, clean, and a great place to slow down.
Then came another hit.
Our flight with Flybondi was canceled with no real explanation.
This wasn’t a surprise—I had seen warnings—but I rolled the dice for the cheaper fare.
That decision cost me:
A lost hotel night
A missed full day in Iguazú
Hundreds of dollars rebooking
We had to book a last-minute flight with Aerolíneas Argentinas for the next morning.
Lesson: cheap flights aren’t cheap when they fail.

Health Scare & Travel Stress
That same night, after the cancellation stress, I experienced a spike in blood pressure—around 151/100—which is not normal for me.
Ended up in the ER for a few hours.
Everything checked out fine, but it was a reminder: travel stress adds up fast if you don’t manage it. I was also fortunate to have signed up for travel insurance with Safety Wing Travel Insurance

Iguazú Falls: Salvaging the Experience
We arrived in Puerto Iguazú already behind schedule. We were supposed to arrive around 7pm the night before but with the delay (12 hrs), we arrived tired around 7am. We dropped our bags and found a store open to grab water and snacks. After getting a little rest, we went out to explore the town and surrounding area and found ourselves right in the downtown heart of Puerto Iguazu.
Then another problem:
To visit Brazil, you need an e-visa if you’re from the U.S., Canada, or Australia.
Missed that detail → canceled tour.
At that point, most people spiral.
Instead, we adjusted.
A local driver stepped in and changed everything:
Took us to Iguazú Falls
Helped arrange access to Iguaçu Falls
Gave us flexibility the tours couldn’t
We explored both sides over two days.
Argentina side: immersive, powerful, close-up.
Brazil side: wide, panoramic, breathtaking.

Tres Fronteras: Three Countries, One View
Before heading back, we visited Hito Tres Fronteras.
This is where Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay meet.
It’s simple—but symbolic. Standing there, you’re literally looking at three countries at once.
We had dinner nearby and wrapped up the Iguazú portion on a high note.

Final Travel Day: More Airline Problems
Returning home turned into another mess.
At the airport, Avianca flagged our carry-ons for weight and size—even after everything we’d already dealt with.
Without a physical card (thanks to the lost wallet), paying was a problem. No mobile payment option. No flexibility.
We missed the flight.
No real help. No real solution.
So I did what experienced travelers do when things break down:
I fixed it myself.
Booked new flights out of Ezeiza International Airport, rerouted through Bogotá, overnight stay, and finally back to Cúcuta.
More money. More stress. But we got home.

Final Thoughts: What This Trip Actually Taught Me
This wasn’t just a vacation—it was a test.
Here’s the reality:
Airlines will fail you
Plans will break
You will lose something at some point
Unexpected costs will happen
The difference isn’t avoiding problems—it’s how you respond when they show up.
What Worked:
Digital payments (lifesaver)
Staying adaptable
Knowing when to pivot
What I’d Do Differently:
Avoid ultra-budget airlines for key legs
Double-check visa requirements
Build more buffer time into flights
Was It Worth It?
Absolutely.
Buenos Aires delivered culture, food, and energy.
Tigre gave balance.
Colonia slowed things down.
Iguazú Falls exceeded expectations.
Even with everything that went wrong, this trip still stands as one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had.
Not because it was perfect—but because it wasn’t.
