3 Keys: My Journey to Becoming My Best Self

Enlightenment Journey
For many years, like so many others, I struggled to discover my best self. The search for meaning and clarity often felt elusive, like chasing the wind. Yet, over time and through various experiences, I have learned that enlightenment is not a destination but a journey—a continuous process of self-discovery, growth, and transformation.
Early Influences: Foundations of Motivation
In my early years, one of my first books I found intriguing was a book by Robert Ringer called Looking out for #1. Looking out for number one is the conscious, rational effort to spend as much time as possible doing those things which bring the greatest amount of pleasure and less time doing whatever causes pain. To achieve this on a regular basis, you must be aware of what you do and the reasons why. I found motivation and inspiration in the works of great thinkers and speakers such as Wayne Dyer, Tony Robbins, and Stephen Covey.
Their messages resonated with me deeply. Wayne Dyer’s teachings on intention and purpose illuminated a path of self-awareness. Tony Robbins’ strategies for personal empowerment gave me the tools to push past limitations and take control of my life. And Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People offered a framework for aligning my actions with my values.

These mentors shaped my initial understanding of what it meant to strive for a better self. However, despite absorbing their lessons, I often felt that something was missing. I could grasp the concepts intellectually, but the emotional and spiritual fulfillment I sought remained out of reach. A New Chapter: The Power of Now
In my later years, I stumbled upon a book that would fundamentally shift my perspective: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. This book was a revelation. Tolle’s insights into present-moment awareness helped me realize how much of my life I had spent trapped in the endless loop of past regrets and future anxieties.

The central message of The Power of Now is simple yet profound: the present moment is all we truly have. By grounding myself in the here and now, I began to let go of the mental clutter that had held me back. I practiced mindfulness, learning to observe my thoughts without becoming consumed by them. Slowly but surely, I noticed a shift. Life became less about chasing goals and more about embracing the journey. This newfound awareness became the cornerstone of my path toward enlightenment.
A Turning Point: Loss and Solace
In 2020, my journey took an unexpected turn with the passing of my mother at 84 years of age. Her death was a profound loss, one that shook me to my core. Grief has a way of stripping life down to its essentials, forcing you to confront questions that you might otherwise avoid. As I sought solace during this difficult time, I came across a video by the mystic Sadhguru. The title of the video had something to do with the significance of the age of 84, and I was intrigued.

Sadguru’s wisdom and intelligence moved me deeply. He spoke about life’s cyclical nature, the importance of understanding our existence, and the spiritual significance of certain life stages. His teachings were both practical and profound, offering a perspective that resonated with the grief and questions I was grappling with. I became an avid follower, immersing myself in his videos and writings. Through Sadhguru, I discovered new tools and practices, such as yoga and meditation, that deepened my connection to the present moment and expanded my understanding of enlightenment.
Lessons from the Masters: Key Teachings That Transformed Me
Throughout my journey, several key teachings from these mentors have profoundly influenced my path:
- Intention is Powerful (Wayne Dyer): Wayne Dyer emphasized the power of intention in shaping our lives. His philosophy taught me to focus not just on what I want to achieve but on who I want to become.
- Empowerment Through Action (Tony Robbins): Robbins’ approach to personal development encouraged me to take ownership of my choices and embrace the power of action. He reminded me that small, consistent steps lead to meaningful change.
- Alignment with Values (Stephen Covey): Covey’s emphasis on living a life aligned with core values helped me identify what truly matters. This clarity became a guiding light as I navigated life’s complexities.
- The Present Moment is All We Have (Eckhart Tolle): Tolle’s teachings helped me break free from the mental traps of the past and future, allowing me to experience life more fully.
- Life is Cyclical (Sadhguru): Sadhguru’s insights into the cyclical nature of existence gave me a deeper understanding of life’s patterns and rhythms. His teachings on inner engineering and self-awareness have been invaluable in my journey.
Practicing Enlightenment: Tools and Techniques
Enlightenment is not a single moment of awakening but a series of practices and choices that bring clarity and peace. Over the years, I have integrated several tools and techniques into my daily life that have supported my growth:
- Mindfulness Meditation: Practicing mindfulness has helped me stay grounded in the present moment. Whether it’s through breath awareness, body scans, or simply observing my thoughts, mindfulness has been a cornerstone of my practice.
- Yoga: Sadhguru’s teachings on yoga inspired me to incorporate this ancient practice into my routine. Yoga has not only improved my physical well-being but also deepened my connection to my inner self.
- Journaling: Writing has been a powerful tool for self-reflection. Journaling allows me to process my thoughts and emotions, identify patterns, and track my progress over time.
- Gratitude Practice: Cultivating gratitude has shifted my perspective, helping me focus on the blessings in my life rather than dwelling on what’s lacking.

Reflections on Enlightenment
As I reflect on my journey, I realize that enlightenment is not about achieving perfection or reaching an end goal. It is about embracing the journey, with all its highs and lows, and finding meaning in the present moment. It is about recognizing that our best self is not a fixed state but a continuous evolution.
Enlightenment has taught me to let go of the need for control and certainty. It has shown me the beauty of surrender, the power of intention, and the peace that comes from living authentically. Most importantly, it has helped me cultivate a deeper connection to myself and the world around me.
Sharing the Journey
I share my story not as a blueprint for enlightenment but as an invitation for others to explore their own paths. Each person’s journey is unique, shaped by their experiences, challenges, and choices. What worked for me may not resonate with everyone, but the principles of mindfulness, self-awareness, and intentional living are universal.
If there is one lesson I hope to impart, it is this: enlightenment is not something to be found outside of ourselves. It is a process of looking inward, of peeling back the layers to uncover the truth that has always been there. It is a journey worth taking, one that leads not to a destination but to a deeper understanding of life itself.
Conclusion: The Journey Continues
As I continue my journey, I remain committed to the practices and principles that have guided me thus far. Enlightenment is not a final destination but a lifelong process of growth and discovery. It is about finding joy in the journey, embracing each moment, and striving to become the best version of myself.
To anyone reading this, I encourage you to embark on your own journey of self-discovery. Seek out the teachings and practices that resonate with you. Be patient with yourself and trust the process. Remember, the path to enlightenment is not about reaching a specific place but about finding peace, purpose, and presence in the here and now.
May your journey be as fulfilling and transformative as mine has been.
