A Birthday Week Adventure in Panama: Beaches, Trains, and Birthday Cakes Over Water

When it comes to birthday celebrations, some people prefer cake and candles at home, but I decided to do things a little differently for my special week in May 2024. Panama, with its vibrant city life, pristine islands, and unique culture, seemed like the perfect destination to celebrate another trip around the sun. Whether you’re single, traveling as a couple, or just looking for your next getaway, this guide will walk you through a week of adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable moments.

Day 1: Arrival at Tocumen International Airport    May 21

My journey began at Tocumen International Airport, where I landed at 11:00 a.m., ready to dive into my Panama adventure. The airport was a pleasant surprise—clean, efficient, and easy to navigate. One of the first things I noticed was how seamlessly modern infrastructure blended with the natural surroundings, giving me a glimpse of what was to come.  Airport sign IMG 20240521 072535184

Rather than splurge on a taxi, I opted for the train system, which connects the airport to the heart of Panama City. It’s affordable, easy to use, and gives you a real feel for the city. My destination? The Sands Apartments, a centrally located Airbnb with a stunning pool and proximity to Poin Panama, one of the city’s trendiest spots.

Once I settled in, I spent the rest of the day exploring my neighborhood and enjoying the panoramic city views from the pool. There’s nothing quite like relaxing after a long flight while soaking in the sights of a vibrant urban skyline.

The day was all about solo exploration before my girlfriend arrived. Armed with a Metro card and a loose plan, I set out to discover the city.

For lunch, I popped into a local eatery to sample sancocho, a traditional Panamanian chicken soup. This hearty dish was the perfect fuel for an afternoon of wandering.

Day 2: Her Arrival and Dinner with a View

On May 22, my girlfriend arrived in Panama, and the energy shifted from solo explorer mode to full-on vacation vibes. I took the train to meet her and couldn’t wait to show her everything I’d already fallen in love within the city.

After dropping her bags off at The Sands Apartments, we spent the afternoon lounging by the pool, which offers some of the best city views you’ll find anywhere.

As day rolled by, we headed to Poin Panama, a chic rooftop spot known for its delicious food and vibrant atmosphere. Between the stunning views, mouthwatering dishes, and great company, it was a night to remember.

Later in the evening we headed to Plaza de la Independencia in the historic Casco Viejo district. This picturesque plaza, surrounded by colonial buildings and charming cafes, is a hub of activity. I wandered through cobblestone streets, marveling at the blend of old-world charm and modern touches. A short walk away, the Municipal Palace stood as a testament to Panama’s rich history and cultural heritage.

Back at The Sands Apartments, I ended the day at the pool, watching the city light up as the sun set.

Day 3: The San Blas Islands – A Slice of Paradise

On May 23, we embarked on a full-day tour of the San Blas Islands, booked through TripAdvisor. This adventure required an early start, but trust me, it’s worth every groggy moment.

The journey to San Blas involves a mix of driving and boat rides, taking you far from the city’s hustle and bustle. Once we arrived, it felt like stepping into a postcard. The islands are a collection of palm-fringed oases surrounded by turquoise waters.

Our guide shared insights into the Guna Yala culture, as the indigenous Guna people are the stewards of the San Blas archipelago. We swam, snorkeled, and relaxed on the white sandy beaches, feeling a million miles away from reality.

A word to the wise: Bring plenty of sunscreen, cash (many islands don’t accept cards), and a waterproof bag for your belongings. The simplicity and beauty of this place make it an absolute must-visit.

Day 4: Poolside Relaxation and a Spectacular Dinner Show

After a full day of island hopping, we kept May 24 more low-key. Another morning by the pool was just what we needed to recharge. The Sands Apartments’ pool area became one of our favorite spots, offering an oasis in the middle of the bustling city.

That evening, we dressed up and headed to the P.H. BICSA Financial Center for the Emotions dinner Theater Live show. Located inside the Hilton, this experience was the perfect mix of entertainment and fine dining. The performers were captivating, the food was exquisite, and the ambiance made it feel like a special occasion—perfect for kicking off my birthday celebrations.

Day 5: Birthday Bash in Bocas del Toro

May 25—my birthday—called for something extraordinary. We caught an early flight from Albrook Gelabert Airport to Bocas del Toro Isla Colón Airport, landing just in time to start our day of celebration.

Bocas del Toro is a completely different vibe from Panama City. Think laid-back Caribbean charm with colorful buildings, friendly locals, and an undeniable island rhythm. After grabbing lunch in town, we took a boat to our accommodations, a stunning overwater retreat where we could literally dip our feet into the ocean from our balcony.

Day 6: Island Hopping and a Sweet Surprise

Our final full day in Panama was spent exploring more of Bocas del Toro. We joined a tour that took us to Punta Laurel and Bastimentos Island, both known for their vibrant marine life and breathtaking landscapes. Snorkeling here was a highlight, as we encountered colorful coral reefs and curious fish. We also enjoyed lunch.

Day 7: Farewell to Panama

All good things must come to an end. On May 27, we flew back to Panama City and eventually made our way home. Reflecting on the trip, I couldn’t believe how much we’d experienced in just one week—from the vibrant city life to the serene islands and everything in between.

Tips for Traveling in Panama
